When you purchase a new cast iron skillet, you may be wondering how to use it for optimal cooking results. In this blog, as a manufacturer of cast iron cookware, I will offer some advice on how to use your new cast iron skillet.
Before you start using your new cast iron skillet, the most important thing is to season it. Our cast iron skillet has been pre-seasoned with a coating of natural, healthy vegetable oil. Seasoning creates a non-stick coating that prevents food from sticking to the pan and prevents rusting. The process involves coating the surface of the pan with some oil and then baking it at a high temperature.
You can do the following when using this new cast iron skillet.
- First, wash the pan with warm water and dishwashing detergent, then dry it with a towel.
- Then, coat the inside and outside of the pan with a layer of vegetable oil, such as olive oil or sunflower oil. Make sure the coating is even and there are no excess oil drops.
- Next, place the pan in the oven and bake at 350°F for 60 minutes.
- At the end of baking, remove the pan from the oven and allow it to cool naturally. Do not rinse it with water or wipe it down with a towel.
This process only needs to be done once, and then your cast iron skillet is ready to use.
Before you start cooking, it is recommended to heat the pan gradually. This is because cast iron skillets need time to distribute heat evenly. If you place the pan directly over high heat, it may cause the food to burn or stick to the bottom of the pan.
Therefore, it is best to heat the pan on medium heat and wait a few minutes for it to gradually warm up. Then, gradually increase the temperature until it reaches the desired temperature.
3. Use appropriate tools
Cast iron skillets are relatively heavy, so use appropriate tools, such as kitchen tongs or spatulas, during the cooking process. Note that the one-piece cast iron handle may be hot, so use insulated gloves to avoid burns.
Cast iron skillets should not be used in the dishwasher as this may strip off the seasoning coating. You can use a stiff brush or sponge to wash the pan in hot water. After washing, dry the pan completely with a towel and apply a thin layer of oil to the surface to prevent rusting.
In conclusion, if used and maintained properly, your cast iron skillet can provide years of enjoyable cooking experiences.
